Debuting on June 11, the new Flying Spur sedan gets the Continental GT’s twin-turbo W12 for a top speed of well over 200mph. It will also come with a retractable hood ornament, a higher price tag, and a more luxurious interior.
Bentley is in its centenary year, and apart from driving around in a Continental GT tank to smash lesser automobiles, what better way to celebrate than by launching a new grand touring super sedan? Starting off the summer season is the 2020 Flying Spur, which is essentially the four-door version of the new Continental. That means it will debut with the same 6.0 W12 that produces 626 horsepower and an asphalt-tearing 664 lb ft of torque in the coupé, but later on, it will also be available with a V8, as well as an electrified V6.
For the first time since the model’s 2005 introduction, the Flying Spur will act as a rear-wheel drive car as standard, engaging its all-wheel drive only if slip is detected. What’s more, to combat its weight, Bentley also threw in rear-axle steering, something you can’t get on the Con`tinental yet.
Built on the Porsche Panamera’s platform but tuned for maximum refinement, the new generation should represent a huge step up from the outgoing Flying Spur, both in terms of body control, comfort, and the smell of leather above 200 miles per hour. Designed to be more than up against Rolls-Royce Black Badges and Daimler’s Maybachs, Bentley is here to show once again after a hundred years in this business, it still knows how to build the most uncompromising super sedans. After all, a Rolls-Royce may not be allowed to sound sporty, but that’s their loss.
